Rules for surviving divorce

Divorce in Florida is a complicated process that can often cause emotional pain and stress. At the law office of Michael E. Golub, we understand that there may be times during the process when you feel that you may not get through it. At these times, it may be comforting to remember that many people before you have gone through a divorce successfully, often coming out even better on the other side.

You should also remember that you are not completely powerless. You have a part to play in setting the tone of the proceedings and helping the process go as smoothly as possible. The following are guidelines that may help you to not only survive the divorce process but thrive during and after.

1. Do not think of divorce as a competition

It is tempting to think of divorce in terms of winners and losers. However, this is not a constructive attitude. The divorce process does not produce any real winners. It is more helpful to approach your divorce with a willingness to make concessions. Instead of trying to come out on top, look to gain the best possible outcome for everyone involved: you, your ex-spouse and your children, if you have any.

2. Try to resolve matters amicably

This often means reaching a divorce agreement through mediation rather than litigation. Ultimately, it may be necessary to resolve the matter in court, but mediation offers significant benefits over a hearing before a judge. It helps to maintain peaceful relations between you and your ex-spouse, plus it is often significantly less expensive than litigation.

3. Maintain communication

Even though you and your spouse will no longer be married after finalization of the divorce, it is best to find a way to keep some sort of healthy relationship between the two of you. This is especially true if you have children. You must continue to co-parent them with your ex, and this is easiest for everyone if you can keep the peace through cordial and constructive communication. More information about surviving divorce and keeping your sanity during the process is available on our website.
