Three important benefits of using mediation in divorce

Divorce can be an incredibly turbulent process. There might be hurt feelings, distrust and a desire to seek revenge. In addition, issues surrounding property division and child custody can add extra stress to an already strained relationship.

Going through acrimonious court proceedings to determine the future of you and your family might be the last thing you’re prepared to handle. Even if your marriage didn’t end on friendly terms, there could still be an opportunity to use mediation for your divorce. Doing so can provide real advantages:

  1. It’s cost-effective. When you’re already faced with the prospect of losing half of your possessions, adding costly lawyer fees for divorce litigation may not be very appealing. The cost of mediation is far lower than litigation.
  2. It can be good for your kids. If you and your ex share children, the chances are good that you’ll have to continue to deal with your ex once the divorce is over. So if you can find a way to take some of the bitterness out of the process, it can be easier to maintain a cooperative, co-parenting relationship in the future.
  3. You’ll have more control. With divorce litigation, your future can be completely decided by a court order. With mediation, you and your spouse both have input in the settlement. This process helps both parties come to an arrangement that works for them.

It’s worth noting that in mediation, the mediator plays a neutral role in helping to reach a divorce settlement. If you would like to have someone representing your best interests, you can also hire an attorney to advocate on your behalf during mediation.
